More on Peru's Election

Mary Anastasia O'Grady writes about Latin America for The Wall Street Journal. In this article, rerun on Americas Forum, she considers the two candidates for president in Peru: Humala and Fujimori. Mostly she is worried about Humala, who has a dodgy history including an attempted military coup. She admits, however, that there are worries about Fujimori as well, based on how her father governed as president.

Many of the seeming political conflicts in Latin America are really racial conflicts in disguise. The poor tend to be indigenous people (aka Native Americans) while the more affluent tend to be of entirely or largely European stock. O'Grady says this is true of today's Peru. It is certainly true of Bolivia, and several other nations in the region.
