A Death Knell

Walter Russell Mead, appearing in The Wall Street Journal, has written a valedictory for the European Union, and indirectly for the United Nations and NATO. In his view, the peculiar conditions which permitted the rise and (sort of) functioning of multinational organizations no longer exist. He writes:
We have reached the end of the age in which serious people could believe international political institutions would replace sovereign governments as the chief actors in international political life.
