Old-Fashioned, Pre-Tech Food

Victor Davis Hanson, aka "the Sage of the San Joaquin," writes in City Journal about recent California water policy's chickens finally coming home to roost. Admitting that agriculture, of which he is a small part, uses a majority of California's water, he muses:
One can purchase an iPhone 6 or a neat new Apple watch, but he still must eat old-fashioned, pre-tech food. There are no calories in Facebook, and even Google can’t supply protein. On the other hand, I can live without an iPad. Who is to say which industry is essential and which isn’t?
"Old-fashioned?" Somewhat. "Pre-tech?" Not so much. Modern agriculture is quite technological but still uses plenty of water.

Lots of rainfall runs off into the Pacific, much of it needlessly. Hanson believes we have been victimized by tree-huggers and self-loathing civilization-haters who want that runoff to continue.
He is correct.
