Peru Votes

The Telegraph (U.K.) reports Peruvians are voting today in a run-off election to decide which of two center-right candidates will be Peru's new President. Leftist candidates were eliminated in the first round. Both finalists are far-from-plain-vanilla Peruvians.

Keiko Fujimori is the ethnically Japanese daughter of a former Peruvian president now serving 25 years in prison for using brutal, extra-constitutional tactics in successfully quelling the Shining Path insurgency. She is married to an American and served as her father's first lady while he was in office for a decade. If elected she would become Peru's first woman President.

Pedro Pablo Kaczynski is the son of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany and is related to several prominent people in Hollywood. He is an economist nicknamed "El Gringo" who has served at the World Bank and IMF and has lived in exile in the U.S.

Peru is one of Latin America's success stories, as the article notes:
Peru’s economy grew 4.4 per cent in the first quarter from a year earlier, compared to 2.6 per cent in Mexico, 2 per cent in Chile, and Brazil contracting 5.4 per cent.
Economic success may explain why no leftist is included in the final round of voting. On the other hand, a lack of support for leftists may explain Peru's economic success. Hat tip to Lucianne.com for the link.
