Scare Tactics

Time has a good article debunking five widely disseminated feminist myths concerning mistreatment of women. Written by Christina Hoff Sommers, here are the five erroneous claims:
  • Women are half the world’s population, working two-thirds of the world’s working hours, receiving 10% of the world’s income, owning less than 1% of the world’s property (bogus numbers).
  • Between 100,000 and 300,000 girls are pressed into sexual slavery each year in the United States (actual number enslaved: a few hundred, half male).
  • In the United States, 22%–35% of women who visit hospital emergency rooms do so because of domestic violence (actual number: < 0.5%).
  • One in five in college women will be sexually assaulted (based on shoddy research).
  • Women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns—for doing the same work (most don't choose same work, or work same hours).
Sommers explains what is wrong with each of those statements, I've sketched her answers very briefly.
