Review: Jason Bourne

This afternoon the other DrC and I saw the new film in the Bourne series, entitled simply Jason Bourne. It uses the same theme music and title graphics so continuity is established immediately.

The intervening years have marked Matt Damon/Jason Bourne as they have all of us. He is no longer a fresh-faced kid, although he is very fit.

It isn't my intention to engage in spoilers so don't look for plot give-aways here. One thing I will say, this film builds on the three prior films starring Matt Damon. The fourth film - the Bourne Legacy? - is ignored as if it never happened, or happened in another universe.

Julia Stiles reprises her role as Nicky, also years older obviously. The agency people are all new, except for some extremely brief flashbacks. Tommy Lee Jones, of Men in Black fame, plays a CIA honcho. He looks older than dirt, I'm certain it's intentional. My reaction to his first close-up was "That's a ruined face."

The new young woman in the CIA hierarchy is named Heather Lee and she's played by Alicia Vikander.  There are multiple chase scenes, including one in Las Vegas that is really something. As typical in Bourne films, hardly anybody gets to die in bed, most have violent ends arranged by the Agency.

I will give you one spoiler, don't read further unless you can live with that fact. The film ends in such a way that another can be made, I say no more than that.

Did we like the film? Sure, it was entertaining, it kept our interest. You end up knowing a bit more of the David Webb/Jason Bourne backstory.

Would we rank it as an all-time favorite? No. It had none of the iconic lines like "Get some rest, Pam, you look tired." Still, we'll probably buy a DVD to complete our Bourne collection.
