Only once in recent memory did the party holding the presidency not take a beating six years in. When that happened in 1998 the economy was roaring along, everyone had a job, and over half the public thought the country was headed in the right direction.
By contrast, today the economy is stumbling along, many are unemployed or underemployed, and 70% of Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction. In other words, the GOP will have to work long and hard to screw up in November - not impossible but definitely not likely.
