Science fiction enthusiast esr blogs at the Armed and Dangerous website about the conflict within the SF field between lefties on the one hand and some combination of righties and libertarians on the other. In explaining why there are many lefties writing SF, esr observes:

Most university humanities departments have, over the last sixty years or so, become extreme-left political monocultures.

Based on my own experiences in academia, I'd replace "most" with "virtually all." Happily, monocultures lack evolutionary robustness.
