The Mountain West Is Best

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index is out for 2014. The states of the mountain west are at the top of the list, no surprise.

South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado are numbers 3, 4, 5, and 6 on the list, and Utah is number 8. To summarize, five of the top ten states are in our region. You could make an argument for including New Mexico (no. 9) in the mountain west, bringing our total to 6 of 10.

Everywhere else shares the remaining four spots. If you're wondering what criteria they examined to score the states, here are their "five essential elements of well-being"
Purpose: liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals
Social: having supportive relationships and love in your life
Financial: managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
Community: liking where you live, feeling safe, and having pride in your community
Physical: having good health and enough energy to get things done daily
