Turkey, Another View

COTTonLINE has posted a number of negative views of the Islamization of Turkey in recent months. Now Al Monitor carries a more sanguine analysis. I believe you may find it a useful counterweight to all the negativity.

The central theme of this recent article is that while the Turkish government truly has become more religious and more conservative, Turkish society is becoming less so. Several examples of public behavior are cited by way of proof for this assertion, including a gay pride parade.

Seen through this lens, the great increase in young women wearing headscarves may be less a religious statement than a fashion statement. The author believes a more religious government will actually influence many people to become less so. One hopes this formulation is not merely wishful thinking.
