The New Tribalism

For a long time, political tribalism in the U.S. was simple, those who felt succeessful voted Republican and those who didn’t voted Democrat. Thus in good times Republicans got elected and in bad times, when fewer voters felt successful, Democrats won.

Unwilling to leave well enough alone, the poobahs of the Democrat Party decided to focus on victim groups as the source of  (think ‘cause of’) lack of success. Once they got started they managed to define everyone not a healthy, young-to-middle-aged straight white male as a “victim” with the sure sense this gave them a permanent majority.

It turns out white women, particularly those who are married, haven’t bought into victim group status. They understand their fortunes are closely tied to those of whites-in-general, which of course includes men.

Time was Democrats could count on getting many white votes. Today, upper-middle class single individuals for whom virtue-signaling is personally important would be the main bloc of whites voting Democrat.

Such tend to be concentrated in large urban areas which already have Democrat majorities, making their votes largely meaningless. Add in that many Hispanics and other immigrants, as non-citizens, cannot legally vote and the Democrats’ “permanent majority” is revealed to be vaporware.

Democrats’ major mistake was prompting whites to become tribal, by urging tribal politics on marginalized groups. How could they think whites wouldn’t notice and follow suit?
