You thought maybe there already was enough political extremism? Good luck with that.
The Washington Post's Dana Milbank reports Democrats are becoming more populist and he cites several examples which support his claim. Most vividly, he notes large crowds turning out for Bernie Sanders, the Vermont socialist.
I'm not convinced Milbank is correct. Clinton has so far run such a low octane campaign, it is totally boring. She offers Democrats little partisan red meat, her low-risk style is also low-reward.
A large part of the fun of politics is having a good orator pander to your prejudices in the ringing phrases of a pep rally. "We're the saints, they're the sinners, let's go bury 'em." Orwell nailed that in 1984 with his "two minutes hate" idea.
Partisan Dems. seek that emotional jolt from Bernie. I've no idea if they are disappointed or pleased but as an underdog he need not pull punches as Hillary does.
Sanders can swing for the fences and, hit an occasional rhetorical home run. The same "nothing to lose" fervor can be found in the remarks of other underdog candidates, notably The Donald and Mike Huckabee.
