Wild West 2.0

I’ve run across a couple of Australian “western” TV series recently. Cattle, men on horseback and ATVs, cowboy hats, satellite phones in shoulder holsters, and the casual use of rifles, things not otherwise common in Oz.

Apparently such TV shows are a sub-genre, a web search turns up a dozen or more titles. Set in the cattle country of Western Australia, where a station (ranch) can run a quarter of a million acres. The owner-families are dynastic - tough as nails without putting on airs. Aboriginals mix with Europeans not always smoothly, crimes happen and are investigated.

The result is sort of Longmire mixed with South Fork. Not bad entertainment, actually. The DrsC are currently semi-binge streaming Mystery Road on Acorn TV.

Related, indirectly … Australia basically rounded up almost all guns in private hands. Guess what? They developed a machete problem. Now they’re trying to get those turned in.

The Brits had a similar experience and they currently worry about “knife crime.” The problem isn’t the implements, it is the wielders thereof. Bad or broken people need to be kept separate from us.
