See a New York Times magazine article about the Russian "troll farm" spreading disinformation and hoaxes around the Internet. They do cleverly evil phony stuff, not unlike a latter-day Orson Welles' radio War of the Worlds.
Whatever the actual outcome, Welles' intent was to entertain. Theirs is to create chaos, panic and civil unrest.
