The Los Angeles Times has a story about higher suicide rates among female veterans than among women in general. You have to read down in the story to find the probable cause: women veterans know how to use, and have experience with, firearms.
It turns out all women are more likely than men to attempt suicide but tend to employ methods less certain of success than a bullet. Women vets use firearms and thus succeed, end of story.
