David Francis, writing for The Fiscal Times, believes that while we've been paying attention to Ukraine, Assad has won the civil war in Syria. COTTonLINE doesn't find this allegation particularly surprising. Of course, some would not call a war "won" until the fighting stops, which it hasn't yet in Syria.
It turns out Assad has had more reliable allies (Russia, Iran) than did the rebels, and his forces are unified whereas the various forces opposing him each think they alone should form the successor government of Syria. Thus, they spend as much energy fighting each other as they do fighting the government.
