See a pleasant Associated Press story about the island of Niue, a dependency of New Zealand which is nevertheless technically independent. Many island residents have moved to NZ, where as Polynesians they have automatic citizenship.
If it is anything like Rarotonga in the nearby Cook Islands, it could be very nice. The blending of Polynesian culture and New Zealand orderliness in the Cooks is very pleasant, very civilized.
The DrsC were on a trans-Pacific cruise that stopped at Rarotonga a few years back. We liked it the best of any island in the South Pacific we've visited, better than Fiji, American Samoa, French Polynesia (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora-Bora, etc.), or the Marquesas.
