Low-Paying Careers

At COTTonLINE we've written about the importance of college students choosing a major for which jobs are available. It is also important to have a sense of what those jobs pay to start, some much more than others.

Generally speaking, the less a career job pays to start, the less you will eventually earn a decade or two into that career. USA Today has an article talking about the ten college majors that pay the least. Hat tip to the other DrC for the link.

The USAT list includes child development, animal science, social work, radio/TV, human development, theology, parks and recreation, culinary arts, education, and behavioral science. From 30 years spent in higher ed, I'd add history, sociology, philosophy, and performing arts.

Not that people will automatically want to avoid the above majors, only that they must understand they are choosing a lesser income and the reduced lifestyle associated therewith. Following one's passion is fine, as long as it's done with open eyes.
