The Washington Post’s Dan Balz is this generation’s dean of political reporters. He writes that - contrary to conventional wisdom - Democrats face challenges in doing well in the 2018 midterm elections.
Their Congressional leadership and many of their likely presidential hopefuls are eligible for Social Security - which is to say “old.” They are also white.
Voters Democrats need to appeal to are “not old” and heavily “not white.” Balz doesn’t mention the racial mismatch.
There is also the issue of what Democrats stand for, beyond being anti-Trump. Balz hints the answer is “not much.”
To fill the vision vacuum, let me suggest a Democrat slogan “Stop Making America Great.” Bernie-ites will love SMAG. Or how about “America Shouldn’t Be Great” or even “American Greatness Comes At The Expense of A Zero-Sum World” which Obama appeared to believe?
