Footnote
Yesterday I wrote about the declining crime rate. I was expressing doubts if it as large as claimed.
I do recognize with our birthrate declining the number of young men has declined. Young men commit a very large fraction of violent felonies.
This demographic fact we know is real, and undoubtedly contributes to the decrease in reported crime. I should have added the above to yesterday's post.
A Ray of Election Hope
Political statistician Harry Enten is a bright spot in CNN’s otherwise dim offerings. This PJ Media piece has him urging caution about polling in the nation’s middle (scroll down).
There the polls nearly always predict a lower GOP turnout than what actually occurs. He warns polls have underestimated GOP strength in several recent elections. GOP control of the Senate remains a definite possibility, if not quite a likelihood.
The bottom line: Go vote as though your life depends on it, rain or snow, regardless. Probably an exaggeration, but ... maybe not ....
Update
Roughly six weeks ago I wrote about Rocky Mountain Seafood located in the smalll valley town of Afton, Wyoming. I ate there again last night and am writing to add this encomium.
Their clam chowder is excellent, as noted before. I am inspired to write in praise of their French fries which are some of the best I’ve eaten ever, anywhere. They actually taste like the best fried potatoes and are deep fried in tallow (beef fat).
What’s more, try dipping them in the chowder - better than catsup or fry sauce. We go south soon and I will miss them.
Poll: Too Close to Call
Breitbart reports as follows:
The monthly Harvard Harris Poll of voters across the United States continues to show Democrat and Republican support at near-identical levels just over a month from November's midterm election.
Among all registered voters in the poll, the parties are split at 50-50 when asked if they would be more likely to vote for a Democrat or Republican candidate for Congress. Democrats take a slight 51-40 percent lead among likely voters.
Whereas the legacy media isn't nearly that even-handed in their vote prognostications. Evident media bias surprises only those who spent the last three decades in a coma.

Ouch!
Wryly ironic quote by law prof and essayist Jonathan Turley.
It is not a good sign when the IRGC shifts from "Death to America" to "Vote Democratic."
Democrats are known by the company they keep, and the backers they attract - communists and blood-thirsty fanatics.
A Trend to Treasure
Are you still groping for a reason to go vote GOP in just over a month? Look no farther than the following chart.
Suicidal Empathy in Action
Washington Monthly has an article bragging the US is having less crime and incarceration, with prison populations down. The three authors allege there is truly less crime happening. Perhaps honest investigators will conclude they are correct, I have doubts.
What is lacking is an explanation of why nearly weekly we read about people with long rap sheets who have walked free and are then apprehended for this or that horrific act.
I believe we are seeing the result of Soros-supported prosecutors and district attorneys choosing to charge far fewer individuals for the same level of crime. They ignore or turn loose on the community many police-apprehended offenders - often mentally ill - who should be separated from society until old age renders them harmless.
The buzzword for this dereliction of duty is "suicidal empathy." The real victims in this scenario are you and me, the law-abiding citizenry. We deserve better from our public prosecutors.

Carney's Choice
It seems to me that Canada cuddling up to China is the very behavior most inclined to trigger a US invasion of Canada: not today or tomorrow, but in a foreseeable future.
PM Carney should ponder that what happened to Venezuela's Maduro could also happen to him, should he succeed in becoming as big a pain in our bum as Maduro had become.

Thinking About 2028
Glenn K. Beaton is a well-known conservative columnist writing from Aspen, CO. Today he analyzes the field and makes a prediction for who will win the 2028 presidential nominations for both major parties, and then the presidency itself.
I won't spoil it for you by revealing who he concludes will win the two contests and then the runoff in November. What I believe you'll enjoy is the reasoning by which he determines the nominees and then the presidency.
I hope he is wrong, and I suspect he hopes he is wrong, too. Sadly, I found little with which to argue. See what you think.
Milei on the UN
Here is the complete text of an X post by Argentine President Javier Milei.
The United Nations has become a useless organization whose entire function is to feed a caste of arrogant parasites masquerading as well-intentioned officials.
Those who claim to defend human rights have backed bloodthirsty dictatorships and regimes that stone women in the streets.
They systematically voted against Israel while staying silent in the face of Islamist terrorism and the murder of Christians in Africa.
Too true. The UN’s one contribution is that it keeps third world busybodies occupied where they can do the least harm. We mostly ignore what happens there.

Gender Specialization
Yahoo News posts a piece from The Telegraph (U.K.) reporting research on newborn children. It turns out infant girls and boys pay attention to different things before they've had a chance to be taught to behave differently.
Infant girls pay more attention to human faces, newborn boys pay more attention to intriguing objects. Their differences are not trivial. This finding addresses the nature vs. nurture controversy, coming down on the "nature" side.
----------
It is clear to me human males and females are differently specialized because that has had great survival value during the long hunter-gatherer period of our evolution - tens of thousands of generations. Specialization by gender gave us additional "bandwidth" as a species.
Our long pre-adult maturation period demands extended childcare. We aren't the fiercest, the fastest, the strongest, nor indeed the most armored species, but we are the most adaptable and the cleverest. Over time, those characteristics have made us the apex predator on this planet, and are now taking us off-planet and beyond.
Ad astra.
Main Character Syndrome
I just learned a new term that may explain a lot of our current malaise. It is "main character syndrome," defined thus.
The narcissistic belief of many people, in this age of social media, that the whole world is nothing but a film in which they are the star. Other people are not really real – they’re just extras, or stock villains (the heartless healthcare executive), or mere props to set up the psychodrama (Clancy’s dead children).
Didn't we formerly call this condition "psychopathy," or was it "sociopathy"? I forget which.

Wishing Trump's Removal
Firewall Auf Wiedersehen?
If you've been following the rise of the AfD Party in Germany, and the corresponding faltering of the CDU/CSU coalition, you know the AfD has been gaining strength in state elections. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's position is is jeopardy as a result.
Henry Olsen, an American who writes widely on conservative geopolitics, deals with this upheaval in German politics in a column for the Brussels Signal. He argues Merz should risk a coalition with AfD in Saxony-Anhalt to see if AfD is willing to back away from its pro-Russia positions and join CDU in pursuing its shared social and nationalist goals.
Offering the AfD that chance in Saxony-Anhalt would give the CDU the chance to test the AfD’s resolve, and test whether it really wants to be part of a Germany centred solidly within the West.
The AfD wants to restart imports of oil and natural gas from Russia, something that all mainstream parties reject on national security grounds. It also harbours strong anti-American and anti-NATO sentiments.
A CDU offer of potential power, then, could force the AfD to choose how strongly it is attached to this aspect of its platform. The CDU and AfD share many goals with respect to fiscal and cultural conservatism.
This would be especially potent if the AfD refused to join a reasonable coalition because of its pro-Russia and anti-American views. (snip) An AfD decision to choose its pro-Russia wing over its new converts would reveal its true colours and likely make it much less attractive to people who only recently started to back it.
Olsen's suggestion seems sensible to me, but neither of us knows precisely how strong the pro-Russia bloc is in AfD.
Why Hybrid Warfare?
My favorite geopolitical analyst - George Friedman - is back from a trip to Poland with a column of good insights about Russia hassling Europe via hybrid warfare. Hybrid warfare is an umbrella term for malicious acts that stop short of actual shooting war. Here are some key quotes.
If Russia were to attempt to attack and occupy the European mainland, it would first have to attack, defeat and to a great extent occupy Poland. Poland is thus what West Germany was in the Cold War.
Because Russia does not border Poland, Russian troops are blocked by Ukrainian forces. The only practical way Russia could attack Poland is through Belarus. (snip) However, the buildup of troops and the logistics needed to service them would be readily visible to European and U.S. satellites.
Russia’s only other course of action would be to attack Europe with drones and missiles. (snip) You can damage a country massively with drones, but as the Ukrainians have demonstrated, you cannot defeat and occupy countries with aerial weapons alone.
The Russian strategy, then, is at this point based on psychological warfare, attempting to convince Europe that it is facing catastrophe without triggering a full-scale war it would probably lose. (snip) Even if the rest of Europe were rattled, I do not think the Poles would be rattled. They know by experience what a Russian occupation means.
Russians are supposedly Europeans but their ethos is, in many ways, Central Asian - more brutal and less squeamish than we have become. It's something older Poles remember all too well.
