Virtue Signalling at NBC

You remember the Iron Curtain, built by Communist countries to keep their own unhappy people in? It did not exist primarily to keep bad people out.

Here comes an NBC News story about the border fence Hungary built to keep Muslim economic refugees out. They describe it thusly:
A campaign that convinced Hungary’s government to build two parallel 10-foot-high razor-wire electric fences at the border, which also doubles as a frontier for the European Union.

The result is a modern-day iron curtain that stretches for 100 miles and is monitored by soldiers, dogs, thermal cameras and 3,000 newly recruited border police officers.
What, you may ask, is wrong with this description? Well, for one thing, any Hungarian who wishes to do so can cross the border in either direction with nothing more than an ID check.

The fence exists to keep out people who have no legal right to enter Hungary. How is their fence different than the lock you have on your door?

Do you have an "iron curtain" at your house? Neither do the Hungarians. They had a security problem and solved it, at no little expense.
