News from Nicaragua

Some might call The Miami Herald the "paper of record" for Latin America, just as many say Miami is the unofficial capital of the region, the major city to which people look for a sense of what might be possible in a Latin city.

Today the Herald has a long story about recent political developments in Nicaragua, the bottom line of which is that Danny Ortega and his wife (and Vice President) Rosario Murillo are in trouble, and perhaps on the way out of power. Three key quotes:
He either lives in a civil way, obeying the law and stopping the brutality and the corruption, or he becomes the Nicaraguan version of the Ceauşescus.

The Nicaraguan Army has signaled a reluctance to get involved in a crackdown on the protests.

It's the grandchildren of the people who overthrew Somoza who are going to overthrow Ortega.
Nicaragua under the Sandinistas has long been a U.S. opponent, an ally of Cuba, Venezuela, and Bolivia. It would be nice for all concerned if this antagonism faded.
