Carnival in Rio 2014

National Review Online has a slide show of 50+ pictures taken at this year's parade of Rio's "samba schools" at the Sambadrome. Carnival is how Rio de Janeiro celebrates Mardi Gras ... nobody does it better.

If you wonder at all the bare flesh tastefully on display, remember that February and March are summer months in the southern hemisphere, the equivalent of our August and September. Because the weather is hot and humid, the parades are held at night, and can go on until dawn.

The DrsC were privileged to see the parade in 2009, following a visit to Antarctica. It was an amazing evening, the police presence was extensive but we saw no trouble whatsoever. A happier crowd would be hard to imagine.
