To understand the workings of American politics, you have to understand this fundamental law: Conservatives think liberals are stupid. Liberals think conservatives are evil.

Liberals believe everyman resembles Mother Teresa, which is demonstrably stupid. Conservatives believe in the motivating power of self-interest, which evidently makes them evil. Go figure.
