Many have commented on Donald Trump's pitch to minority voters. his asking particularly African-Americans "What the hell do you have to lose?" Most seem to think this is likely to fail, and if you assume it is a serious attempt to get more than a handful of black votes, they are probably correct.
I find more persuasive the notion that he's really speaking to white, educated voters, while appearing to speak to black voters. He may be attempting to counteract allegations of racism that have turned off the more committed cosmopolitan virtue-signalers among white college grads. In accompishing that it may be effective.
It's clear from his immigration speech last night that Trump understands he cannot back away from his signature position on secure borders and no amnesty. That's a good thing.
