Project Syndicate has an article about "religious" intolerance in India, under the Modi government. More specifically, a growing intolerance for those who slaughter and/or eat beef. A number of individuals suspected of doing so have been murdered.
Presumably everyone in India not a Hindu might be guilty. According to the CIA World Fact Book, that means 20% of India or one person in five.
Actually, the article says some poor Hindus also eat beef as it is cheaper than other meats. That is certainly unlike the West, where beef tends to be more expensive.
Americans eat roughly 80 lbs. of beef per person per year, according to industry sources. Do you suppose some of the difficulty India has in feeling close to the U.S. stems from our well-documented proclivity for eating beef nearly daily. It could be a factor.
