A Magnet for Flakes

George Orwell, author of the later 1984, wrote in his earlier book The Road to Wigan Pier, the following bemused observation, quoted by Ed Driscoll at PJ Media:

One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words ‘Socialism’ and ‘Communism’ draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist, and feminist in England.

Orwell wrote that in the mid-1930s. It could have been written today.
