The idea that humans can function like honey bees where every individual works selflessly for the collective good of the hive keeps cropping up. Even though it never works in practice.
A better non-human model for how humans cooperate might be a bison herd. We may hang out together but are individuals, not hive units.
It requires military-like regimentation to get us to sacrifice for the good of the group, and the threat of extinction to get us to accept that need. It isn’t our standard everyday species behavior.
