Ebb and Flow

The other DrC ran across this map from the Census Bureau that shows the percent change in county population during the period July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2022. She knew I'd enjoy it, and I do. We both like maps.

It almost appears that there are waves of change moving across the country. Areas of decline on the west coast, growth in the mountain west, decline in the plains just east of the Rockies, modest growth in the strip running north from TX, decline along the Mississippi River, gain running up the east coast with the exception of the Rust Belt and NY.

If you enlarge the map on a computer screen, the patterns to some degree become less visible. The extreme bailouts along a strip running north from El Paso and along the Mississippi remain. States with mostly state-wide growth include FL, ID, UT, AZ, ME, and NH.

We know TX is growing but in that very large state it is spotty, largely clustered around Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, and Austin. The same sort of clustering could be seen in TN, GA, and SC.
