Why Murdaugh?

The other DrC and I have been puzzling over the prominence given the Murdaugh murder trial in tidewater South Carolina. Thumbnail summary: a wealthy and prominent local attorney accused of murdering his wife and one son. Found guilty after a very short jury deliberation.

Our question: how is this national news? Yes, Alex Muraugh was a big fish in the relatively small pond that is tidewater South Carolina, maybe even the biggest. However, prior to this trial he had zero national name recognition.

So why was Bret Baier giving it airtime every night during the trial? Beats me, it is almost as if "wealthy white guy is capable of murder" is a foreign concept to whoever makes story choice decisions.

It turned out the defendant was also stealing money from clients and using drugs ... again, big whoop. An attorney being less than legal ... shocking to some perhaps.

A favorite snarky cartoon features two attorneys' wives getting acquainted. Wife one, defining her guy's specialization, says, "My husband is a criminal attorney." Wife two, misunderstanding, asks, "Aren't they all?"
