Researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (once known to locals as “the RadLab”) have found a new way to produce refrigeration, and possibly heating as well. They call the method “ionocaloric cooling" and it apparently produces more cooling with less electricity usage than other methods. The findings are reported in ScienceAlert. No one has successfully developed an alternative solution that makes stuff cold, works efficiently, is safe, and doesn't hurt the environment. We think the ionocaloric cycle has the potential to meet all those goals if realized appropriately.
