A Simple Solution?

The Independent (U.K.) reports the Dutch have Christmas characters, associates of their version of Santa Claus called Sinterklaas, named Black Petes (Zwarte Pieten), played by folks in blackface. Their role in some ways resembles that of Santa's elves. Hat tip to Lucianne.com for the link.

This tradition has become controversial, as the claim is made that it burlesques those of African descent. Apparently there is a move to ban the Zwarte Pieten.

COTTonLINE asks why the Dutch don't have residents of African descent portray the character, obviating the need for blackface and frizzy wigs. Nothing seems more natural. It is a beloved traditional Christmas character so playing it should accrue positive feelings toward Netherlands residents of African ancestry.

I'm always suspicious of simple solutions; perhaps there is a part of the Black Pete story not reported. Something demeaning that would discourage actual persons of African heritage from portraying him.
