Scratch Scalise

What a difference a day makes in politics. Yesterday Steve Scalise (R-LA) was going to be the Republicans’ candidate for Speaker of the House. Today he’s discovered there is no way he could get the 217 votes necessary to win the position. He has withdrawn his candidacy and will stay on in his present position of Majority Leader.

It appears a sufficient number of Jim Jordan supporters refused to vote for Scalise. Now rumor has it Jordan will run again and perhaps someone will run against him.

There is also the possibility no Republican house member can win the 217 votes and the speakership.  There is talk of giving the Acting Speaker additional powers and letting him continue in office. It is not inconceivable McCarthy might be reelected as the lesser of several evils.
