Now the slender GOP majority in the House has chosen Scalise opponent Jim Jordan to be their next candidate for Speaker. He got 125 votes in caucus this time, and still has to get all but 4 of the remaining Rs, for a total of 217, to be elected.
That is a steep hill to climb. Former speaker Kevin McCarthy predicts Jordan will get the needed votes but McCarthy‘s predictions haven’t been overwhelmingly accurate.
Meanwhile the Democrats sit on the sidelines and snipe at the disarray among Republicans, which has to be galling to the GOP. Maybe we’ll know next week who will be speaker.
