When I quote something “second hand” as I did below, quoting Bret Stephens NYT commentary from a secondary source - Althouse’s blog - know that I recognize doing so isn’t ideal. Quoting the original would be preferable as Althouse may have made an error in transcription or done some selective elision.
I do so because, unlike Althouse, I earn no money from my blog and hence cannot write off a NYT subscription as a business expense. I make an effort to find the material posted to a site with no paywall, and sometime succeed. Other times, like here, I am unsuccessful in that effort and take the risk when it seems justified.
Life is like that.
