I just followed an Instapundit link to an article at alternative news site Slay which apparently is interested in the ramifications of Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) laws in Canada. Our friends up north are considering extending the adult right to ask a doctor for help in dying to “mature minors,” though probably only those facing a terminal diagnosis.
This led me to an interesting “what if,” so I’ll say the quiet part out loud. Suppose we allowed felons receiving a life sentence without parole to request MAiD. Death by anesthesia has to be easier than death-by-shank.
I wonder how many would choose MAiD? Maybe a non-trivial percentage of the newly convicted and a similar percentage of the already incarcerated. If lifers prefer to die painlessly and society doesn’t have to provide life-long upkeep and guarding, how is that not a win-win?
Soylent Green anyone?
