The prolific Joel Kotkin writing at UnHerd about the idea of a potential Gavin Newsom presidential candidacy.
He presents the face of an emerging Democratic Party based on what the late Fred Siegel called “an upstairs, downstairs” coalition of the gentry rich, the dependent poor and the vast, well-paid union bureaucracy that serves them.
If present trends continue, I foresee a time when most of California’s middle class will consist of government employees - workers for cities, counties, special districts, school districts, the state and the feds, including the military. Kotkin calls this group "the clerisy."
Full disclosure: I retired from that “vast, well-paid union bureaucracy.”
