The American way of politics still has within it the ability to surprise us. Who would have guessed a prosecutor (Hur) appointed by a Biden appointee (Garland) would report the truth we all have witnessed about Biden’s infirmities? And that Garland would release that report without comment?
A priori you’d have gotten very long odds against what actually occurred. Further thoughts on the Hur investigation of the Biden secret document mishandling and release follow.
Hur claims that Biden is guilty but not sufficiently alert mentally to be tried. Biden himself and his minions in the White House claim he is totally fine mentally. Both cannot be true. Meanwhile nobody is disputing that mishandling of classified material - a crime - occurred.
Hur's boss Merrick Garland has two clear choices. He should either indict and try Biden* if he believes the claims of mental fitness, or undertake 25th amendment proceedings to remove Biden for unfitness for office if he believes Hur's claims of Biden mental fogginess. The Federalist’s David Harsanyi endorses this latter view.
Garland had a third option, which was to disavow the entire Hur enterprise as bungled. However, he foreclosed that option when he released Hur's report without demanding changes.
Releasing it may cost Garland his job, as he serves at the pleasure of the President. Prediction: Garland will take no action and hope to hang on for the remaining 11 months in office.
Later ... Not that it matters but Robert Hur is of South Korean parentage, see his photo here.
