Leading the Forlorn Hope

During the Napoleonic era of fighting in Spain, cities were walled and besieging artillery would pound the walls until a gap was created, fronted by a pile of rubble. A luckless junior officer would draw the short straw and have to lead a group of men charging up into that gap. The mortality rate of this group was so high the unit was called "a forlorn hope."

Speaking of forlorn hopes, imagine being an organizer for the Democrats in Wyoming. WY is perhaps the most Republican state. Only one of the state's 23 counties reliably votes for Democrats - Teton County, home of Jackson Hole.

Politico had an intern - a former WY resident - interview Greg Haas who is identified as the "organizing director" of the Wyoming Democratic Party.

Imagine trying to do Greg's job in Wyoming where the Ds don't even run a candidate for some positions. It has to be on a par with promoting celibacy to polygamists, a forlorn hope.
