In Praise of “And”

Essayist-on-steroids Victor Davis Hanson writes to answer this question: “Is Biden Malicious, Incompetent, or Conniving?”  Without even opening the article, I have a reaction to the title alone, and it is this.

Who needs “or?” Embrace the healing power of “and.” Biden is clearly all three in one past-the-sell-by-date, shopworn package. He is maliciously conniving in a largely incompetent fashion.

It is his very good fortune to be in the arena with the most polarizing, larger-than-life political figure since Ronald Reagan, one Donald J. Trump. Absent Trump, Biden would now be another boring has-been like Paul Ryan.

President Trump managed to turn off enough voters to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in 2020. Doing so, he elevated a garrulous, corrupt nobody to president.

Given the opportunity in office, it appears Biden has performed the same trick Trump did. He is now as unpopular as body odor. The question is which of the two - Trump or Biden - is more unpopular. Recency bias should make the winner of that contest Biden.
