Potemkin Showed the Way

Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning eleven time zones. Ukraine is not quite as big as Texas, all of which is in one time zone.

NATO exists to defend against the Soviet (now Russian) hordes. Nobody has worried about being attacked by Ukraine.

If Ukraine hasn't been handily defeated by Russia, as clearly they have not, they've won just by staying in the game. As soon as Russia bogged down and had to withdraw from near Kyiv, they'd lost.

Regardless of the war's eventual outcome, the myth of juggernaut Russia is dead. Their carefully curated image of military might now has "Potemkin village" written all over it.

They did it to themselves, and it didn't need to happen, a classic self-inflicted wound.
