The Third of June

It's that time again, the day each year we honor singer/song writer Bobbie Gentry and her epic "Ode to Billie Joe." The Southern gothic ballad begins:
It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day.
When a novelist turned the song into a book and then a movie, it was titled "Ode to Billy Joe." I've seen a photo of the 45 rpm single and it is definitely spelled Billie on the label, where it was the B side.

Ode spent 4 weeks at #1 on the Billboard list. Like everybody else, I don't know what was thrown and why Billie Joe jumped.
