George Friedman of Geopolitical Futures writes with a heads-up from the Balkan tinderbox.
I have heard from two people I trust highly that Serbia is preparing for war. Serbia and Kosovo fought a bloody war in 1998-99 in which the U.S. and NATO sided with Kosovo and conducted a bombing campaign against Serbia. I hope these sources are wrong, but I think this will happen and spread beyond the Balkans.
For another, more detailed look at these Serbia-Kosovo tensions, see this article in Foreign Affairs.
Friedman embeds this warning in the mosaic of seemingly unconnected conflicts either brewing or active around the world. He wonders why all this is happening at the same time, and hints it’s because the US became bemused with its internal disagreements.
A Serbia-Kosovo conflict would have elements of jihad, as of course does Israel-Gaza and Russia vs. Turkey in Syria. Islam seems disinclined to “play nicely” with those not in the ummah.
