Bloomberg has the news that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, known by his initials as AMLO, has won an expected decisive victory in today's presidential election in Mexico. As the article notes, he doesn't take office until year's end as that is the way elections are conducted in Mexico. His single term will last six years.
Apparently it won't be clear for several days whether his coalition has also won a majority in both houses of the legislature. Many who find AMLO scary are hoping that doesn't happen.
AMLO campaigned on a "clean up the corruption" platform. As his term gets fully operational, it will be interesting to see to what extent he can deliver on that extravagant promise.
If there is a former Spanish colony anywhere that doesn't suffer rampant cronyism and graft, I'm unaware of it. The culture has many graceful elements, but clean government isn't one of them.
Still, Mexico is our neighbor and I wish them well. I hope for their sake AMLO succeeds in improving their lives.
