Over the last couple of days I have been chatting with a friend who is a successful entrepreneur and all around good guy. Our subject, at least some of the time, how screwed-up our country has become.
He is of the opinion that current trend lines take us in the direction that ends up in violence that is more than sporadic or episodic. I agreed that was a distinct possibility, though not a sure thing.
It is a view I hear more and more in the mountain west. Do the bicoastals have any idea of the widespread resigned acceptance that violence is coming, sooner or later?
Historically, our political system has "managed" such strains in the body politic. That was true in an era when there were newspapers with editorial biases favoring each party. That era is gone.
Entertainment, media, journalism, academia, and the government bureaucracy are all "captured" by one party, which nevertheless represents no more than a third of our populace. The rest of us aren't loving the current situation, and the people who count the ballots and report results aren't much trusted these days.
It is hard to be optimistic about a peaceful resolution of our dilemma.
