Failing Upward

The failed former DA of San Francisco - Chesa Boudin - was recalled (i.e., voted out of office) for being too lax in enforcing the law. His reward, getting hired by the law school at UC Berkeley to head a new Criminal Law & Justice center. And he is a white male.

Meanwhile, former mayor of Chicago Lori Lightfoot who recently lost her bid for reelection has been hired by Harvard to teach leadership in the school of Public Health. She is at least black and gay.

What is there about documented public career failure that makes these people prime candidates for jobs in high prestige academia? Inquiring minds want to know.
