Labor Day Musing

Tomorrow is Labor Day, originally created to honor voluntary associations of workers who came together to confront managements and win better wages, hours, and working conditions for non-supervisory workers. The labor movement today remains strong mostly with government employees. In the private sector it has lost its vigor.

The modern Labor Day is simply a day we do not labor, making a three day weekend that - along with the Memorial Day weekend - are the bookends of summer for most people. The original purpose appears lost.

This 2020 is the strangest and most ill-favored year most of us can remember; in spite of which I hope you have a nice extended weekend. Remember to social distance and wear a mask when you can’t.

Stay well, we’re getting close to a vaccine. And I’m ready to get back to my life-as-it-was.
